Building confidence and staying active in Shildon
Customers in Shildon are improving their fitness, confidence and social connections thanks to a new exercise programme, delivered by Durham County Council’s Thrive team.
We carried out tenant engagement, which showed people wanted more opportunities to stay active, socialise and make better use of communal lounges. In response, we worked with Karen Lamb from the Thrive team to introduce seated aerobics and social activities for people of all abilities.
The first session took place last week in our communal lounges at West Close and Rowan Avenue. Sessions include gentle seated leg and arm stretches and light resistance band exercises, all delivered at a steady, supportive pace. Many tenants said they have not exercised in years, and the sessions have been designed to be inclusive and accessible, helping everyone take part and build confidence together.
Sheila Buckley, our tenant, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed my first session, and I have been practising with the resistance band at home. I haven't done any exercise in the last year, and I am thankful for the classes.”
Lisa Newham, Community Regeneration Adviser, said “The success of these sessions in our much loved community lounges, demonstrates the value of listening to residents and working with them and partners to deliver activities that will benefit them directly. A huge thank you to the Thrive team and all of the tenants who came along to the first session”
Karen Lamb, Thrive Community Wellbeing Assistant, said “Its great to see community activities bringing people together, reducing isolation, and creating opportunities for individuals to improve their physical and mental wellbeing in a supportive environment.”
Seated exercise sessions will run until 8 June at Rowan Avenue on Mondays from 1:30 pm, and at West Close from 11:15 am. There is no need to book; you can simply turn up to take part.
