Funding helps protect and improve local nature reserves

We're helping to improve local nature reserves in Spennymoor and Trimdon, making them safer and more accessible while protecting wildlife and natural habitats.

Through our Community Regeneration Grant scheme, we provided £4,000 to support improvements at Tudhoe Mill Wood Nature Reserve and Trimdon Grange Quarry Nature Reserve. The project has been delivered in partnership with Durham Wildlife Trust and local volunteers, helping to enhance the sites for both wildlife and visitors.

Both reserves have benefited from a range of improvements designed to protect habitats while encouraging responsible access. These include new interpretation boards, kissing gates and measures to reduce damage to sensitive areas.
The project supports priorities identified through our 2025 Customer Voice engagement, in which residents highlighted the importance of green spaces, biodiversity, sustainability, and the local environment.

Tim Davies, Durham Wildlife Trust, said: “We would like to thank Livin for supporting this important project. The improvements will help protect the reserve, raise awareness of the fantastic work taking place across Durham Wildlife Trust's sites and encourage more residents to get involved in volunteering. Volunteers play a vital role in helping us care for existing nature reserves and develop new areas for wildlife, and we hope these improvements inspire more people to become involved.”

Andy Coulthard, Community Regeneration Manager said: “We are committed to creating places where people are proud to live. By working with Durham Wildlife Trust and local volunteers, we are helping to protect important local nature reserves, encouraging responsible access, supporting rewilding and creating opportunities for people to improve their health and wellbeing through spending time in nature.”
