Helping young people in West Cornforth build confidence with money

We are supporting young people in West Cornforth to build confidence with money through a new savings club delivered in partnership with NE First Credit Union and Cornforth Partnership.

Running weekly at West Cornforth Primary School, the club gives pupils a simple and practical way to save in a safe, supportive environment. Each session, they deposit money, update their savings cards, and track their progress, helping them see how small amounts can grow over time.

Pupils from the savings club said; “We like putting our money in every week and seeing it grow. It makes us feel proud.”

Mrs Costello, Headteacher of West Cornforth Primary School said; "Having the Credit Union in school is an excellent way to help children develop positive saving habits and a healthy respect for money from an early age. It provides valuable, real-world opportunities to build financial awareness and fosters meaningful collaboration with Cornforth Partnership. The children are enthusiastic about their savings books and look forward to bringing in their money each week, taking great pride in watching their savings grow and seeing the benefits of regular saving firsthand."

Malcolm Gray, Community Investment Manager said; “We’re committed to supporting our communities to thrive, and that includes helping young people gain the skills they need for the future. This initiative is a simple but effective way to introduce saving, build confidence and give them a strong foundation for managing their money.”
