Music for the Mind helps community spirit in Ferryhill

What started as a series of music workshops has become a lifeline for people across Ferryhill, helping residents build confidence, make friends and boost their mental wellbeing.

Music for the Mind, based at the Ferryhill Ladder Centre, brings together up to 10 people each week to learn instruments, write songs and enjoy the benefits of being part of a supportive community.
The group grew from the Hope Not Hate project in 2025 and has continued to thrive thanks to the dedication of local partners and the enthusiasm of those who attend.

Working alongside the Ladder Centre, Laura Morris, Ferryhill Housing Adviser, has helped promote the sessions to Ferryhill residents, encouraging people to access the support and social connections the group offers.

For tenant Neil Petrie, joining the group has been transformative. Through weekly sessions, he has made new friends, explored his creative side and seen a significant improvement in his mental health.

Gary Miller, Music for the Mind, session leader, said: "The group helps tackle social isolation and supports better mental health in the area. Without continued support, we would not have been able to develop this unique and worthwhile project."

Malcolm Gray, Community Investment Manager, said: "Music for the Mind shows the difference community-based activities can make. By bringing people together, building confidence and creating new friendships, the group is improving wellbeing and helping people feel more connected. We're proud to work with the Ladder Centre and support projects that have such a positive impact."
