Spennymoor community lounges upgraded through local partnership
Two much-loved community lounges in Spennymoor have been enhanced, making them even better places to gather, thanks to a collaborative effort with Hardwick Homes, who are currently delivering new homes at Moulders Park.
In alignment with their commitment to support the local area, the Hardwick Homes team has funded a new refrigerator for Hartley Terrace Lounge and provided new flooring for Inglesgarth Lounge. These contributions have helped maintain the popularity and functionality of these valued community spaces.
Serving approximately 50 people each week, Hartley Terrace Lounge is used by volunteers Rosie King and Margaret Gibson, alongside local community volunteer groups. The lounge offers a variety of activities including crafts, bingo, indoor bowls, knitting clubs, and first aid training. At a recent event, the group enjoyed fish and chips in the sunshine, a simple shared experience that underscores the importance of everyday social interaction in reducing loneliness.
Inglesgarth Lounge is supported by long-standing volunteer Gaynor Owens from the Inglesgarth Residents Social Group. It supports between 30 and 75 people weekly, hosting bingo, craft sessions, evening and weekend activities, and organised day trips, such as visits to Whitby. Regular lunches and quizzes are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, welcoming people of all abilities.
Rosie King, Hartley Terrace volunteer and our tenant, said: “The lounge means everything to people. For some, it’s the only reason they leave the house and see others. I love running the groups and seeing the difference it makes – whether that’s crafts, bowls or just sitting together and chatting. Having facilities, we can rely on really helps us keep the lounge going.”
Liam Pugh, Aftercare Manager, Hardwick Homes, said: “As part of our commitment to working positively within the communities where we build, we are pleased to support local spaces that are clearly valued and well used. We hope these improvements will help the lounges continue to serve the community for many years to come.”
