Joe Dawson, a former miner from Newton Aycliffe celebrated his 100th birthday today (6th June 2024) and welcomed us into his home to reminisce and share his celebrations.
His birthday started early with a visit from his son and daughter in law who both travel from Sheffield to see him every week, and a very special birthday card from King Charles and the Queen Consort.
In his working life, he began as a newspaper lad where he used to get 6 shillings, and 10 pence (which is about 55p) before joining the Home Guard during World War II where he served his country.
Joe proudly shared with our Chief Executive, Alan Boddy that on 1 June 1946, a few years after the war, he married his beloved wife Joyce with whom he shares the same birthday, and spent many happy years together with their son Kenny. Sadly Joyce passed away and their wedding photograph pays tribute to her taking pride of place in his living room.
Joe was a miner for many years, but his favorite job was working as a fork truck driver until he retired and enjoyed caring for racing greyhounds.
He sat happily in his armchair and announced "You're only as old as you feel" and we couldn't agree more.
Many happy returns Joe and thank you for sharing your special day with us.
