Local housing association, Livin has continued its annual garden competition, recognising that gardening is a great way to keep active and healthy and is good for mental health. The ‘Blooming Marvellous’ competition went online in July inviting tenants to compete for best yard/patio, best individual garden, or best community garden.
Photographs were submitted online and were judged virtually.
Winners Ken and Anne Thompson from Sedgefield (best yard/patio), Catherine Coussons from Chilton Lane (best individual garden) and Kenneth Robson from Newton Aycliffe (best community garden) each received a certificate and £100 voucher.
This year saw the highest number of entries into the competition resulting in eight being highly commended, each receiving a £25 voucher. These were Karren Hardy, Susan Osment, Rita Hewitt and Andrew Hartley from Ferryhill; Karen Nicholson from Trimdon; and Peter Cawson, John Coulson and Winifred Lord from Sedgefield.
Chair of the Board Alan Fletcher, who was a member of the judging panel said: “The importance of our garden, however big or small, has never been greater as we all stay closer to our home and in our communities during this difficult time. We were determined to keep the competition going despite the restrictions”
“An attractive garden is not only for you and your family, it is shared by everyone who looks over your fence or passes your gate, and brings a smile to everyone’s face. We have had some truly great entries and all the gardens are a credit to their community”
