Spennymoor youth project brings colour and community spirit to the town

Young people in Spennymoor have been making a big impact in a creative way—through street art. What started as simple outreach sessions has grown into a vibrant project that’s brought colour, energy, and pride to the heart of the community.

Over 20 young people took part in creating a striking mural in Jubilee Park, unveiled just in time for the Spennymoor Gala. They also created a bespoke mural design for the youth club’s pool table cover, leaving a creative mark that will be enjoyed for years to come."

Delivered through an outreach youth work programme, the project ran from April to July, offering five hours of weekly engagement. Led by SYACA Outreach Youth Workers David and Claire, alongside Moors Coach Josh and graffiti artist Lewis from Durham Spray Paints, the sessions combined football in the park with hands-on street art workshops.

We are proud to have supported the Spennymoor Youth Connect PLUS  with just over £3,000 in funding, which was matched by support from the ASB Trailblazer programme. On top of that, we helped secure an extra £4,300 from Spennymoor AAP—giving the team the resources they needed to create something truly special. This funding made it possible to build engaging, meaningful activities into their outreach work, at a time when tackling anti-social behaviour is a real priority for local residents.

Andy Coulthard, Community Regeneration Manager, said; “We were delighted to support this project, which has shown how creative engagement can have a real impact on young people and the wider community. By combining street art with youth outreach, the team created a space where young people felt heard, valued, and inspired. It’s a great example of how targeted investment can help tackle anti-social behaviour while building pride and connection in our neighbourhoods.”

Michael Fishwick, Project Co-ordinator, said; "We’re really grateful to Livin for funding these sessions. It meant we could reach young people who don’t normally engage in our youth services. Street art and football in the park, working with Durham Spray Paints and Moors in the Community, gave the kids taking part the chance to connect with our youth work team and each other. It gave those who took part chance to learn new skills and try something different".
