Future coders get creative at half term code club

Children in Shildon got hands‑on with game‑making this February half‑term as Shildon Alive teamed up with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to run an exciting Code Club.

Local primary school children spent the morning getting creative by building their own side‑scrolling platform games. With support from Reece O'Dwyer from our Transformation Team, the children designed custom characters, added quirky features and learned valuable digital skills. Shildon Alive also helped families, fueling the day with healthy lunch and snacks.

The club has been running since October 2025 and shows no signs of slowing down. With Easter sessions already in the diary, there’s plenty of space for more young creators to get involved.

Melody Townsend, Code Club Attendee, said: "Code club was fun, I met new people and learned how coding works. It helped us get out of the house during half term. It’s good to know how games are made and even though it was a bit hard to do, it was made easy for us and I enjoyed it.

Reece O’Dwyer, Process Improvement Analyst, said: “It was great to see the children get stuck into coding and try out new ideas. Watching their confidence grow as they applied their creativity to solve problems and bring their own games to life was truly inspiring. They should all be really proud of what they created.”

Lauren Robinson, Community Engagement Officer, Shildon Alive, said: “Code club great for anyone wanting to give coding a try and learn new skills. Children can create their own video game, design a website and make a movie. It’s great to learn whilst creating and having fun.”
