NextGen pathway launches to inspire future careers in construction

We’re proud to launch our NextGen pathway—an exciting new programme that opens doors for young people to explore careers in construction and gain hands-on experience before they leave school.

As part of the launch, we welcomed four Year 11 students from Whitworth Park Academy—the first to join our new pathway initiative. This programme is designed to support young people who are preparing to leave school within the next 12 months, helping them take confident steps towards a successful future.

The pathway supports students as they prepare for apprenticeships or college, offering one day a week of hands-on experience with our repair operatives. Over the academic year, they’ll explore a range of trades, gaining insight into the construction industry and building confidence for future employment. On their first day, Helen Johnson (Livin Futures Manager) and Liam Wilkinson from our repairs and maintenance provider, Mears, welcomed them with an introductory session, PPE, and welcome kits.  They will continue to mentor and guide them throughout the programme.

Helen Johnson, Livin Futures Manager said; "It’s fantastic to see these students taking their first steps into the world of work through the NextGen. We’re here to support them every step of the way - helping them explore different trades, and discover where their strengths lie. It’s all about opening doors and showing them what’s possible.”

Liam Wilkinson, Deputy Employee Director for Mears Group said; “The NextGen pathway gives these students a real taste of what it’s like to be on the tools. From plumbing and joinery to electrical and brickwork, they’ll be working alongside experienced operatives and getting stuck into the day-to-day of the job. It’s a great way to build practical skills, understand what's involved, and figure out which trade suits them best.”
