What Happens Next?

Silverdale Place, Langdale Place, Eskdale Place, Whinlatter Place, Kirkstone Place and Honister Place are the six streets which make up the Western Area estate in Newton Aycliffe.

Livin is working closely with residents, community groups and partners to improve the estate and tackle the issues which have been identified in consultation with residents and owners.

The Outcome

Residents, Livin and partners, such as the Police and the Pioneering Care Partnership have used the results of previous community consultation to apply for a Lottery grant.  In June 2019 £50,000 was awarded by the National Lottery Community Fund to support the residents to work towards the establishment of a Development Trust for the estate over the next two years.  Livin have added an extra £22,000 towards the bid as matched funding to enable the development of local projects that will start to make a positive difference on the estate.

Current and forthcoming activities include:

  • The refurbishment of the Western Area Community Centre, which is taking place ready for school summer holidays with residents helping to decorate the building.
  • A new programme of activities, which has been developed with various partners and will start in July and August 2019 with a summer holiday scheme for the children and young people of the estate.
  • A new name for the centre, with pupils of nearby schools and residents from the local community asked to put forward their ideas
  • A community event to celebrate the reopening of the community centre and the end of the school holiday programme, this will take place on Saturday 31 August where a vote will take place to rename the centre
  • A Time Limited Project (TLP) for the estate, which has been set up with the police and partners looking at community safety and ASB issues. The TLP will be part of the Lottery programme and seek to instigate projects and services to address previous consultation issues on community safety.
  • The Lottery programme, which will start to look at addressing employability and learning, health and wellbeing, building and environment, community cohesion and social isolation problems across the estate.
  • Regular community and partner litter picks, which have taken place out of Silverdale House with Livin staff, Police, partners and volunteer
  • A housing support programme, which will see Livin visiting all tenants this year, offering support with financial wellbeing, social wellbeing and general housing advice.
