York Hill estate

About York Hill regeneration

Three Years ago livin, with the whole community behind us, embarked on an ambitious plan to regenerate York Hill estate. This involved transforming homes, public spaces and supporting local projects to help people improve their financial wellbeing; get involved and feel healthier.

We have done it, Together with the community and partners such as Mears, The Homes and Communities Agency,  The Big Lottery Fund and many more.

"The regeneration at York Hill is a tremendous achievement. It is hard to overemphasise the changes and has really delivered residents with quality accommodation, transforming the community in the process"

- Spennymoor's Town Mayor, Cllr Ian Machin

  • You may have seen in the local press Helen Goodman popped along to see first hand the works planned for York Hill.

She said  “I was absolutely delighted to see the work beginning on the York Hill Estate to create new family homes to a very high standard and to make this a really nice place to live. This was one of the most positive developments I’ve seen in the past 12 months.”

Alan Boddy (executive director of housing and business development)  and Vicky Miller (community regeneration manager) accompanied Helen around the site along with our contractors Mears to give her a flavour of what is to come.

Alan Boddy, executive director of housing and business development said: “I am delighted to see phase one of this programme underway.  The properties are already generating interest and the estate has already improved.  We hope that by continuing to work alongside local community partners and community groups we can create a thriving and sustainable community.”

Whats on?

With partners and the community we have generated £188,795 in HACT social value and attracted £48,000 for local projects. Now we see activities with over 60 kids of all ages regularly attending Foundation of Light youth sessions and 30 more families regularly attending family sessions in York Hill, including cooking, crafts and dance.

  • Just as important as the physical regeneration of York Hill has been the opportunity to work with residents in building a stronger community where people can get to know their neighbours and become actively involved in their neighbourhood.

We have been able to develop and deliver a range of community activities and events designed to bring people together.

Tudhoe Community Centre has been a hub for many of our activities and events during the project, including:

    • Dance
    • Crafts
    • Multi-sports
    • Youth club
    • Holiday club
    • Family fun days
    • Action days
    • Resident meetings

  • To mark the successful completion of the York Hill regeneration programme the community came together at the end of November 2017 to join livin for an official unveiling and party.

Celebrations included a weekend of carol singing around the Christmas tree, food, music and crafts at Tudhoe Community Centre and a family disco.

Thanks to all who supported, donated and got involved.
